A chemical peel is done to improve the look of the skin. After application, the top layer of skin peels off revealing a smoother complexion. It normally takes several treatments for complete results, with enough timing in between to allow the skin to heal. Chemical peels are known for getting rid of dark spots, reducing wrinkles and drying out acne.

Good Candidates for Chemical Peel

Many people struggle with skin issues of some sort. Whether a person is dealing with dark spots, wrinkles or acne, chemical peels work well by penetrating the deeper layers of the skin. While typical creams and masks work well in some cases, a chemical peel is a more severe form of treatment, thus it provides better results.

A good candidate for a chemical peel is someone who is not afraid of the peeling that may happen before the beautiful, smoother skin is revealed. Extremely sensitive skin types should also avoid chemical peels. Generally, chemical peels work best on people with fair skin and light hair. This is not to say that individuals with darker skin have not had success; there have been many cases of successful skin peels with every skin type. However with darker skin, there is the possibility of unevenness after the procedure.

Different Types of Chemical Peels

Once the decision has been made to try a chemical peel, a person is faced with an array of different types. For less severe skin troubles, a light peel may be all it takes to get results. Light peels use AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) to achieve a mild peel on the skin. Common acids used for this are glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids. The skin does not hurt, but may have a slight tingling sensation. Healing time is also shorter than the deeper peels.

Medium level peels are able to achieve more visible results. They often use TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) to go deeper into the skin. Healing times are longer with this type of peel, and the level of discomfort is higher. Healing takes about seven days, but the skin may appear a bit red for up to six weeks from treatment. For ultimate results, a deep peel may be necessary.

Deep peels are very severe and should only be done by experienced dermatologists – like those here at Pristine MedSpa. The healing period can be quite scary since the face may swell and cause a lot of pain. Scabs tend to form before peeling off and revealing new skin underneath. Deep peels should not be done on darker skin, since it may cause scarring and permanent bleaching. Phenol peels are used in deep peels, since they are the strongest ingredient.

Aftercare

After getting a chemical peel, protecting the skin from the elements is vital. A chemical peel temporarily weakens the skin’s defenses against the elements. Without a high level sunblock, newly treated skin can end up getting damaged and burned. This can be very devastating, since the condition of the skin will be left worse than before the treatment was done. For best results, choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays and is at least SPF 60. Additionally, wearing a large hat, which physically covers the skin from the sun, is recommended if being out in the sun is unavoidable.

Getting clear, beautiful skin can be achieved by getting a chemical peel. Wrinkles, dark spots and acne are just a few reasons someone may choose to have a chemical peel. With proper care, hydration and sun protection, a chemical peel can provide beautiful results with less effort than typical skin care products. Choosing a professional service that is well known for providing good results is important when undergoing such a sensitive procedure.
