A facial is a full skin care session that deep cleans, exfoliates, and nourishes the skin, leaving it glowing with health. Facials produce a bright, clear complexion and can even help make the skin look younger.

Consultation

A professional facial starts with a consultation. The esthetician asks about health conditions, skin concerns, medications, and current skin care regimen. This information helps the esthetician select the correct products and techniques to use during the facial.

Cleaning

Next, the esthetician thoroughly cleans the skin using the appropriate product(s) for the patient’s skin type. Once the skin is clean, the esthetician will examine it with a magnifying device to evaluate the presence of skin conditions and determine the basic skin type. Following the analysis, patients with dry skin or in need of extractions will have their skin exposed to warm steam to soften and moisten it.

Exfoliation

The dead skin cells are then removed using either mechanical or chemical exfoliation. Mechanical exfoliation uses abrasive substances to rub off dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliation is gentler, and uses enzymes or mild acids to lift away dead skin cells.

Extraction

If the patient has a lot of blackheads or whiteheads, the esthetician will remove them using a special device and technique. Extractions can be mildly uncomfortable but are the safest way to remove the dried plugs of sebum that cause blackheads and whiteheads. Extractions should never be attempted at home – they can rupture capillaries and cause severe damage to the skin if performed incorrectly.

Massage

Next, the esthetician will massage the muscles of the face to promote circulation to the skin and relaxation. Special gentle stroking techniques are usually used.

Mask and Finish

After the massage, a mask will be applied. Masks deeply nourish and hydrate the skin, and can deep clean the pores. Masks leave the complexion glowing and vibrant. After the mask is washed off, the skin will be toned, anti-aging serums applied, and then a layer of moisturizer and/or sunscreen will be added. The esthetician will then provide advice about how to care for the skin until the next professional facial.

Professional vs. DIY

Professional facials are administered by trained, licensed estheticians. They can detect serious skin problems and help keep them from getting worse, or suggest the patient see a dermatologist for early treatment of a suspicious blemish. They can educate patients about how to treat annoying skin problems. They are also trained in techniques to reduce the signs of aging.

In addition to providing access to the skill of a trained skin-care professional, a professional facial also offers access to professional-quality skin care products. Professional-quality products contain highly effective ingredients that can quickly improve the appearance and texture of the skin.

How Often

To maintain that glowing, bright complexion, it’s best to get a professional facial once a month. Both men and women of all ages benefit from regular professional facials.
