As winter approaches, it is time to take a look at the best ways to keep your skin healthy as the weather gets colder. From dry skin to chapped lips, take a look at these seven top tips for keeping your skin healthy and beautiful when the temperature starts to drop.

Choose the right cleanser.

During the winter it’s best to skip the soap. Regular soap can be harsh and dry out your skin, which is already dry enough when the humidity drops. Instead, look for a detergent-free alternative that is specifically designed to maintain moisture. Ingredients such as glycerin can help to keep your skin smooth and moist this winter.

Skip the hot shower.

A long, hot shower can seem like heaven first thing on a cold winter morning, but long exposure to hot water can strip the moisture from your skin and hair. Try to limit your showers to lukewarm or cool water, and your skin will thank you.

Care for your lips.

Breathing through your mouth combined with cold winter air can lead to chapped lips. When your lips get cracked and dry, they are more prone to infection. In order to prevent that, keep a high-quality lip balm on hand and apply as needed. Keep some on your nightstand as well. Applying lip balm before you go to bed can reduce overnight dryness and keep your lips healthy and smooth.

Don’t forget your sunscreen.

Did you know that snow can reflect more sunlight than a day at the beach? While you won’t be playing in the waves any time soon, it’s important to remember your sunblock. The sun emits UVA rays all year round and exposure to that damaging sunlight can have consequences for your skin. Remember to apply a good sunblock before venturing outside.

Pamper your feet.

Winter is the season in which the most people complain about dry, painful cracked heels. If your feet need a little more care, try this: apply a specialized moisturizer for feet, or heel balm, then cover your feet with clean cotton socks and try to stay off them as much as possible. You’ll see a noticeable difference in a very short amount of time.

Avoid damp clothes.

It seems like everything gets wet when winter rolls around. Try to avoid wearing wet gloves or socks any longer than you have to. Wearing damp clothes can irritate your skin, leading to itching, sores, or cracking. Remember to thoroughly dry your gloves and socks before going back out into the cold winter air.

Increase the humidity.

Winter air is dry and we heat our houses by forcing hot, dry air through them. All this dry air is naturally going to suck the moisture out of your skin. To help combat the damage, utilize a humidifier to bring the relative humidity up in your home or office. Your skin will thank you.
