What is PRP Replacement Therapy?

PRP, or platelet rich plasma therapy, is a breakthrough cosmetic treatment that uses your body’s own blood platelets to rejuvenate the skin and correct a broad range of aesthetic issues. This treatment can be utilized on its own, or used in combination with microneedling and laser skin resurfacing procedures to bring patients longer-lasting, more dramatic rejuvenation.

PRP Replacement therapy works because it enriches problem areas with 5-10 times greater concentration of blood platelets than usual. Platelets contain hundreds of different proteins known as growth factors that are critical in the healing of injuries. When these growth factors are flooded to an area plagued by wrinkles, fine lines, or scars, they help soften these features to give patients smoother, healthier-looking skin. When used in conjunction with other treatments, platelets can help speed up the rate of healing and extend results of treatment much longer than they would last without PRP.

How Does it Work?

The PRP used in PRP replacement therapy is extracted from the patient who is undergoing treatment. Once a sample of blood has been taken, it is processed through a centrifuge. This process separates the PRP from the rest of the blood. Once the PRP has been isolated, it is injected back into the body at the treatment site.

While it is not entirely clear how PRP replacement therapy works, it is generally agreed upon that the additional growth factors are responsible for the accelerated healing and rejuvenation that take place.

What are the Benefits of PRP Replacement Therapy?

Many patients that might otherwise be hesitant to undergo a cosmetic treatment are comfortable with the idea of PRP replacement therapy. This is because both on its own and with other treatments, PRP does not introduce any foreign chemicals into the body, and is only comprised of your body’s own materials.

On its own, PRP replacement therapy can be used to correct a broad range of aesthetic issues. Some of these include:

  • Loss of facial volume
  • Facial wrinkles
  • Facial folds
  • Under eye circles and hollows
  • Neck and chest lines
  • Scars

PRP replacement therapy can also be used with ablative laser resurfacing and microneedling procedures. When added onto these treatments, it can both help decrease downtime experienced and extend visible results. In particular, PRP replacement therapy works well with microneedling to help stimulate hair growth. This procedure has also been known to increase the effectiveness of topical medication because it helps deliver it more deeply into the skin.
