Minimally-invasive techniques to help reduce signs of aging include injectable agents such as neurotoxins and dermal fillers. These two types of injectables have different mechanisms of action and produce different results.

At Pristine MedSpa and Laser Center in Ridgecrest, we use both neurotoxins and dermal fillers to help fight the signs of aging. Though they are both injectables, they are not the same. Our medical staff can help determine which treatment option is right for you and your needs. If you’d like to fight the signs of aging on your skin, contact Pristine MedSpa today.

Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins include Botox, Dysport and Xeomin. Neurotoxins act to block the nerves from activating the facial muscles. When injected into the face, the targeted muscles are unable to contract normally. When the targeted facial muscles stop contracting, they stop pulling on the overlying skin and therefore creases, wrinkles and fine lines smooth out. Neurotoxin injections are particularly effective for eliminating lines and creases on the forehead and brow area.

The effect of neurotoxin injections only lasts for around 3 months, after which the injections have to be repeated. Some individuals believe that neurotoxin injections given at a relatively young age can prevent wrinkles and creases from forming in the first place.

Dermal Fillers

The aging process causes the tissues under the skin to thin out, which makes wrinkles more apparent and causes the skin to sag. Dermal fillers are intended to reverse this process by restoring volume and fullness to the face.

There are many different types of dermal fillers. Some fillers only last a few months, others are essentially permanent. Some are soft in texture and others are much firmer. Different fillers are selected for different locations in the face and for different individuals, based on which type of filler is most likely to produce the best cosmetic effect.

Although dermal fillers are primarily intended to “plump up” the face, they tend to also minimize the appearance of wrinkles, creases and fine lines. Restoring volume underneath the skin smoothes it out.

Filler, Neurotoxin, or Both

The choice of injectable depends on the area to be treated and individual patient characteristics. For example, for crow’s feet, neurotoxins are usually the treatment of choice. However, individuals with very deep or long lines around the eyes may get better results from a dermal filler. Similar principles are used for other creases and lines on the face – shallow lines are best treated with neurotoxins, and dermal fillers work better for deep creases and lines.

Facial contouring and “liquid facelifts” primarily use dermal fillers to add volume to selected areas of the face. The plumped-up areas become smoother, stop skin from sagging and in general produce a more youthful appearance. A common full-face treatment procedure is to use dermal fillers on the lower portions of the face and to use neurotoxins on the forehead and brow area.

Our team can evaluate each patient individually and recommend various products for various parts of the face to produce the most cosmetically pleasing result.
